One of the issues that faces many learners is the ongoing support after the training. After all, if training is only 10% of learning then how do you ensure your clients get the most out of the training you deliver.
Also, what if you are just trying to help someone out? Over the phone is a reasonable support mechanism but we wanted to take this a little further. So, using e-learning development tools, we came up with the idea of e-learning support.
I answered a call to arms, as a fellow networking member was struggling to understand Styles in Word 2007.
Now with Word 2007 you can also use themes to influence the styles in use. However this would only allow you to choose 2 fonts. This is OK for a lot of documents but not so much for others.
So Styles became the main focus with the colleague.
I called them up to find out the issues they had and then got their email details. I then developed 2 e-learning modules. Word 2007 Themes and Word 2007 Styles. These were quick and easy modules with no real effort to make them a polished full on training package. There is no audio and very little effort in making lots of notes for them to follow.
The idea for these ad-hoc support modules is that they should be quick and simple. So within 20 minutes I had the 2 modules written and uploaded to my website here. I then sent out the email to the client with a link on how to get to the files.
From these simple modules, they were able to then use styles more effectively and understand them much better.
Yes I could talk them through, how to do it. However, they would be spending more time listening to me and following the instructions than they would learning. Also, by watching the modules, they are able to see the bigger picture and visualise where they need to be, this is much harder to do other the phone.
At some point in the future, I will revisit these modules and tidy them up. These ones are .exe files so I will understand peoples reluctance to download them. So for my future ones I will make them flash based and embed into the website.
